There are many different ways to start a discussion about sustainability and eco practices. Games, films, books, series, any form of media can be a platform for debate. Presenting a dilemma in the form of a story can be a playful way to present science to an audience. Public interest in science requires “some sort of a translation process,” which narrative television dramas can help facilitate.

The cartoon series Danny Phantom facilitates this translation by bringing up several important ecological themes. Sam Manson, who has titled herself an “ultra-recyclo vegetarian” is often the voice that addresses these themes. In the episode ‘Mystery Meat,’ she started a schoolwide debate about vegetarianism versus meat. In ‘Memory Blank,” she protested against new environmentally unfriendly vehicles and wished them all away. In ‘Urban Jungle,’ she protested the city’s policy to demolish greenery to place new concrete structures. These episodes then proceeded to introduce their antagonists based on her observations, which were all themed for the debate (The Lunch Lady was a meat-loving ghost, Desiree was a wish-granting ghost, and Undergrowth was a giant plant ghost who tore down the concrete parts of the city).

In the case of this series, “some sort of translation process,” was achieved by creating an ecologically-concerned character, and then including several fun fantasy aspects (such as the ghosts). By doing this, the series translated ecological issues into a form of communication that’s easy to engage with.
