“S, telephone,” Cassandra called through the bedroom door. “It’s Charise.”

S peeked out of his bedroom. Cassandra handed him the telephone. “She sounds really upset,” she added, not hiding the glee in her voice.

“Thanks, Cassandra,” S replied, taking the phone and shutting the door.

He heard his father in the next room, complaining, “I don’t like that little girl calling Samuel. Girls shouldn’t be pursuing boys like that.” His mother murmured a response, probably something quiet and neutral and polite.

“Hello?” S said into the receiver.

“S?” the voice on the other side said shakily.

“Charise, what’s wrong?” S asked.

“S… I need you to come here. Now.”

“Why?”

“Come down here now,” Charise repeated.

“Okay, fine,” S replied. Charise sounded really unhappy. “I’ll be there in a little bit.”

-------------------------------------------

S was escorted to Charise’s bedroom by her grandmother. “She hasn’t come out all day,” she said softly. “Maybe if you talk to her, you can cheer her up.”

S nodded and knocked at the door.

“Who is it?” Charise called from inside the room.

“It’s S.”

“Come in.”

S tried the door. “It’s locked,” he complained.

“Oh, hold on,” Charise replied. S heard the lock click, and then Charise opened the door.

S was shocked by how Charise looked. Her eyes were puffy, and there were tears on her pretty face. Her normally neatly styled hair was a tangled mass, and she looked as though she’d slept in her clothes.

S hurried into the bedroom and Charise shut and locked the door behind him.

“What’s wrong, Charise?” he said softly.

Much to his surprise, Charise flung herself into his arms, sobbing. She clung to him, pressing her face against his chest.

“Charise…” he gasped.

“It’s about Gideon,” Charise finally whispered.

“Gideon?” S asked. His eyes narrowed. “What did he do to you?”

Gideon had always been rather popular, with both boys and girls at their school. S had horrible mental images of Gideon doing terrible things to a resisting Charise.

Charise replied with a soft whimper, “I… asked him out.”

S let out a soft sigh of relief. Charise continued, “But he turned me down.”

“For who?” S asked.

Charise gave him her most indignant look, “He turned me down… for Sheridon. For another guy!” She sobbed. “What does Sheridon have that I don’t?”

S said, trying to make her laugh, “Well, anatomically speaking, he does have a few things that you don’t…”

Thankfully, Charise laughed a little. “Thanks, S… I really value your friendship.” But then, she turned serious. “But these days, it doesn’t seem like friendship is worth all that much.”

She sighed. “I’m still not sure how I’ll be able to deal with this. I mean, I really liked Gideon a lot. I’ve liked him for a few years…”

S stroked her hair gently. “It’s okay, Charise. I bet there’s lots of guys out there who would love to go out with you. Your birthday’s next month; maybe by then, something will happen…”
